Between Dark and Dawn

Apparently, after initial hype, reactions to The Last Crusade have cooled somewhat. And yeah, Scootaloo has the worst parents ever, which is why they had to be so awesome. Which is precisely why she’s better off without them, ever. 🙂 This is still one of the most watchable episodes in seasons, and I think our takeaway is meant to be that the Cutie Mark Crusaders being together is way more important than a family who barely ever sees one of them. Kinda like the mane six.

This week, I guess we’re going back to the ridiculous season premise. Not the cool premise, the ridiculous one.

Yaknow, I spent seven years watching this show wanting just one thing: An episode focused on Celestia and Luna. And even though A Royal Problem was pretty awesome — thanks entirely to the presence of Daybreaker — even that episode had issues with the way it portrayed Best Princesses.

It’s been a downhill slide since then. 😐 Neither Celestia nor Luna has gotten any real respect since about season two, and it’s gotten to the point where I just don’t like seeing them on screen anymore, because I know it’s going to be nothing but cringe the whole time they’re there. How did we get to this? And what dark god can I make a sacrifice to to make it go away?

After Celestia and Luna showed up in the first scene, I spent the rest of this episode in a constant state of facepalming, questioning my life choices and sighing in exasperation. Rainbow Dash sums up the episode best: “One question. WHY?

Why do I feel like the plot is a mishmash of numerous other, better episodes?

Why are there so many goddamn meme faces?

Why is there a song?

Why can’t we have nice things?

Why does no one respect the Princesses anymore they were so great once ;_;

And what is up with that episode title? Like, it’s just so long and awkward. Kind of like the episode so I guess it’s fitting

Ultimately, you can trace the reduction of the princesses’ character the same as Fancy Pants. In season two, he was an awesome, self-aware goad in the side of the ultra-snooty Canterlot elite. Nowadays, he’s just another snooty Canterlot elite. There’s no purpose to having him around other than brand recognition. He’s useless, he’s pointless, he’s purposeless, and the princesses are no better.

I just hope I never see this again, it’s one of the worst episodes of the show’s run.
